MISSION AND HISTORY

In Indiana, suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for youth ages 10-24. What is not reported in Indiana's statistics is how intersectional issues such as sexuality, gender identity, socioeconomic status, bullying, and a combination of all of these have an impact on the ability for our youth to cope. Indiana has also been the focal of many anti-LGBTQ+ regulations and sentiments . Fort Wayne is the second largest city in Indiana, and I am so amazed with all of the resources available.  One area that is not being addressed is LGBTQ+ youth and family support services. Indianapolis has Youth Group Indiana, and Columbus has Kaleidoscope that have these serves, but they are a great distance away and also leave a gap of family support. I've made it my mission to aid in youth of all populations by showing them that they are not alone; in particularly, LGBTQ+ youth. "UNITE Youth & Family Initiative" will aid in the advocacy, education, awareness, and support services of LGBTQ+ youth and families with a goal to develop a center that will be a "hub" of resources and support for LGBTQ+ and allies. Not only serving youth, but it was important for me to provide an outlet for families of youth that are LGBTQ+ and LGBTQ+ identified parents to receive support, resources, and guidance. This center will also provide workshops and education for community members, teachers, companies, etc around LGBTQ+ issues.

In February of 2017, Jillian "Jay" Watts organized UNITE Youth & Family Initiative and is the process of finding funding and completing the board for completion of a 501 (c) 3. This will not be possible without the support of partners and community members. Are you ready to be a part of the movement?

"One community. One Heart" will set the tone for youth and families that they truly have an extended family that wants the best for them.
